AN ARTIST’S REFLECTION BY SISTER MARIA LIEBECK, DC

I am an artist from birth and a Daughter of Charity for over half a century. For twenty- five years I taught art on all levels, (I have an M.A. from the University of Dallas) and for the last half I’ve used art in community development settings from urban to rural in Iowa, Missouri, Texas, Arkansas and Puerto Rico.

During the past fifteen years I’ve been connected with Helping Hand of Greater Little Rock food pantry and thrift shop. As coordinator of community outreach, I tried to lift spirits and self-esteem of the clients by offering to draw their portraits, framing them for the center and gifting individuals with a print to keep..

I became involved in art shows. Art sales benefited the agency. Paintings became prints.

My note cards soon followed making originals affordable to more people. They are sold at a few of shops in the area and I have membership in local art organizations.

I enjoy oil pastel and water color resist as well as soft pastel and a paper batik style. Conte crayon on Mexican bark paper is another of my favorite media.

The sacred feminine is a recurring theme, with unusual interpretations of religious topics. Nature and local scenes are popular.

The logo on my business/artist card is “The Woman Tree”. The women of Helping Hand inspired me with their deep faith and positive outlook despite overwhelming odds.

For the last few years I’ve enjoyed full time art ministry. I’m very blessed.
