Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B-2012

The Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head (Lk.9:58—NABRE)

The Word came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him (Jn. 1:11). If Jesus comes to his Church, would we Christians accept him?

I am sure we will not try to hinder him. We will not do as did his relatives who thought he was out of his mind (Mk. 3:21).

Neither will we join those who take someone to be an expert only if one does not hail from the same place as theirs, and the further away one is from, the more expertise one is accorded. We will not play the crabs in a bucket either, who pull each other down, so that no one is able to escape.

Nor will we allow familiarity to make us take offense. In the first place, we can be questioned as to whether we know Jesus thoroughly. In the second place, we are made to understand that to know Jesus well cannot possibly result in rejection of him (1 Cor. 2:8-10).

Not to accept Jesus is born rather out of lack of knowledge. It is essential, therefore, that we have intimacy with Jesus, knowing him as best as God’s grace allows and making sure that his words remain in us (Jn. 15:7).

This underscores the importance of preaching and catechesis in the Church as well as the need it has, as a great harvest—says St. Vincent de Paul—of laborers who really work, who instruct the poor, loving God with the strength of their arms and the sweat of their brow, and who feel bad that they cannot evangelize the great number of poor people in so many other villages that are waiting for the mission to be preached to them, and who do not consider old age to be an excuse not to work for the salvation of the poor people [1].

We also need to embrace sound doctrine and not the novelties and myths our ears are itching to hear (2 Tim. 4:2-4). That is why we respect the charism of infallibility that is individually present in the Roman Pontiff, and which the college of bishops also enjoys [2]—albeit that some critics speak of “creeping infallibility” that overreaches and is made to apply even to legitimately debatable issues [3].

But above all, to know Jesus and to savor his words, every Christian has to go or return personally to the Sacred Scriptures, to the Gospels especially, for, as St. Jerome warns, ignorance of Scriptures is ignorance of Christ. We shall let ourselves be carried away at the same time by the Holy Spirit, so that he may teach us all things and remind us of all that Jesus has said and guide us to all truth, including the truth that is difficult swallow (Jn. 14:26; 16:12-13). We will bear the hard truth, admitting humbly that there is always something that is lacking in us, even in those who have been favored with great revelations, so we are kept from being too elated.

And one thing that the humble will note as they go back to the primary source that the Scriptures are is that Jesus, just like the prophets who were his precursors, dissented from the dogma and praxis of the religious establishment, which led to his being rejected and crucified outside the gate (Heb. 13:12). This dissent is remembered in the Eucharist. As we recall that our Lord was a dissenter, doesn’t it behoove us not to vex or oppress dissenters? Those forced out of their homes and live on the margins of society, it is not at all impossible that these possess the truth and preserve the true religion and have an unbreakable strength (cf. Acts 5:34-39) [4]. Had St. Paul not opposed St. Peter to his face (Gal. 2:11), what would have happened to the Church?
