Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B-2012

Let us then go to him outside the camp, bearing the reproach that he bore (Heb. 13:13—NABRE)

Jesus is rejected in his own native place, among his own kin and in his own house. Aren’t those settled in their house too satisfied perhaps with the amenities and formation afforded by familiar surroundings that there is no one other preacher or teacher who can show them a more comfortable life or teach a justice exceeding theirs?

Regardless of whether this is the case or not, let me say that one risk homebodies run is their possibly coming to believe that they know it all and are not in need of any continuing formation or of reformation. Another danger is that it may not take the domesticated too long to take for granted the goods and benefits they enjoy at home or to feel entitled to all of them. Self-complacency and lack of gratitude do not make for openness to grace, the praise of God who has blessed and chosen us in Christ or the beatitudes.

Blessed are the poor, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven, they being the ones who most listen to God’s call. God calls the poor, yes, those who find security only in God, not in the roof over their heads, nor in wisdom, power or fame. He sends Amos who is not part of the royal sanctuary, is a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores, without priestly or prophetic pedigree. Jesus entrusts the mission to fishermen, a tax collector and to seven more, whose occupations are not mentioned, and so, not notable, presumably. God can make use of whomever he likes, but he chooses the poor especially, so that they may work with Jesus in the building of the Church or in repairing what is falling into ruin. For they hold little or no promise of formation or reformation, those who are seated on the magisterial chair, the guardians of sound doctrine and right conduct. These scheme deceits and plots against the prophets of reform and put their tradition, their interests, their careers and their dreams of fame ahead of God’s word and glory, ahead of the common good and the salvation of souls.

The poor, not having anything to lose, are the ones to go swiftly out two by two to be the presence of him who guarantees his being in the midst of the two or three who are gathered in his name, the same one who goes about doing good, preaching repentance and serving as instrument of healing. The poor do not let themselves get bogged down by heavy baggage and are content to bring along only the bare essentials. They depend on God, and on his servants, for food and lodging. They stay in the same house for the duration of the mission, lest they dishonor their host and show themselves opportunists who seek for themselves the best accommodations. Lowly, they do not lord it in a triumphalist manner over those who do not welcome them or listen to them, even though they express disapproval.

The poor embody better than anybody the evangelization of the poor and most effectively bring it about. They are the sacraments of the one who suffered outside the gate, whose presence is signified and realized in the Eucharist. To pay attention to them is to discern the body of Christ.

And it is for this reason that we exert effort to comply with St. Vincent de Paul’s exhortation: “Let us go then and be about serving the poor with new love, looking for the poorest and the most abandoned” [1]. To go to the poor and be with them, that is how one responds persuasively, according to Bl. Frédéric Ozanam, to critics who put into question the credibility of the Church [2].
