2. What are some of the gospel values in the medal?

GOAL: Appreciate two traditional Vincentian devotions.

NOTE: WHILE THESE DEVOTIONS ARE NOT AS POPULAR AS THEY WERE IN THE PAST, SOME PEOPLE STILL USE THE SCAPULARS. IN MANY OF OUR HOUSES IMAGES OF THESE DEVOTIONS CAN BE FOUND. IT'S IMPORTANT THAT THE NOVICES KNOW ABOUT THE SCAPULARS AND RESPECT THE GOSPEL VALUES EXPRESSED IN THESE DEVOTIONS.

THE FILM: "MONSIEUR VINCENT"

Before showing the film it would be good to ask the novices to think about the following:

-Moments when the cross or crucifix appear
-Scenes that are historical
-Scenes that are not historically accurate.

The dialogue can center around the following:

-Which scenes spoke most strongly to you?
-What does the film say about St. Vincent?
-How much of the film is historically correct?

The following can be be highlighted:

-Art speaks a truth, but not neccessarily through historical data.

-Some scenes are inventions of the author(Anouilh), but they capture a truth(i.e. St. Vincent never rowed for a galley slave, but that moment in the film speaks about Vincent's identity with the poor.)

-Maurice Cloche, the director, recreates many famous paintings, a technique later used by Zefferelli.

-The cross always seems to appear when someone is about to betray the poor. Christ crucified stands in judgment.

-Some say the film is an atheistic presentation of St. Vincent. Is that the case if Christ is found in the poor?

-The excuses used by the characters to avoid the poor are really modern excuses.

-The film begins in 1617, as if to say the real life of Vincent begins then.
