III. THE WORKS AND ACTIVITIES OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL


Note: The Goal of this section is to allow the novices to understand the way the charism was manifested through the primitive works. One way of presenting the material is to have the students research and give class presentations on the works and activities of St. Vincent.

POINTS OF EMPHASIS:


-The popular missions were a response to a situation in which the majority of French peasants were not evangelized. They were a means and not an end.


-The emphasis was on missions to the poor not missions per se.
-Vincent attributed their success to:

POINTS OF EMPHASIS:


-Vincent saw that without good priests to continue the work the missions would not be successful. This was especially true because the only recognized pastoral
agents were priests.


-They began small with short retreats and crash courses in pastoral duties. Little by little, the retreats were expanded into a longer program.


-The emphasis in the Vincentian seminaries was always on spiritual-pastoral aspects. The goal was to form pastors for the poor.


-To support the clergy the Tuesday Conferences were begun. This was a meeting of priests that came together for prayer and discussion.
